The library newsletter is sent out four times a year to current members of the library and anyone else who would like to keep up to date with the latest developments in healthcare.

Trial of journal collection

Until the end of December, we are a part of a North West wide trial of a large collection of journals which are directly linked to searches using the NHS Healthcare Databases Advanced search. These will also be added to our journals A-Z.

Dynamed

DynaMed is updated daily through a 7-step evidence-based method for systematic literature surveillance so clinicians can find the best available evidence at the point of care. DynaMed topics provide synthesized summaries integrating new evidence with existing evidence to directly answer most clinical questions in a single source. Dynamed has a partnership with medical staff at McMaster University.

Practice Changing Dynamed Updates

On the Dynamed home page, click on Recent Updates . Tick the box beside Practice Changing Updates Only on the right hand side. Limit your search further by selecting your area of interest from the drop down menu to the left of this. You can set up alerts easily for your selected topic.

Continuing Medical Education points
Once in a topic, you click on Get CME for this topic and an online form designed to record your activity will appear. Complete this and email it to yourself to record your activity for your portfolio

Mobile Dynamed
Dynamed can be uploaded to mobile devices. Devices that are supported includes Blackberry, iPhones and Smartphones. Contact the library if you would like to try this

PANacea - the physical activity and nutrition network

PANacea is a new online network developed by the National Heart Forum to link the global physical activity and nutrition community. The resource can be used as a communication tool between public health practitioners to improve quality of service, support professional development through peer support and enable health initiatives to progress more quickly. Membership is free, but is restricted to those who work in public health, in particular physical activity and nutrition. Some general content is available to the public.

Free access to SAGE journals for 90 days!

The library has arranged a free trial to SAGE health science journals for the next three months. If you're employed by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust or you're a student on placement at Stepping Hill, you can access the journals with your Stockport NHS Athens account. If you work for NHS Stockport, you can come into the library and we'll log on for you. There are about 150 health science journals in the SAGE collection - click on http://online.sagepub.com/ and then browse the list. The free trial will run until the end of November.

Prodigy: a free evidence-based resource

For those of you who used CKS (or Clinical Knowledge Summaries), you'll be pleased to know that it's back as PRODIGY. If you're new to this resource, it's an online source of evidence-based information about the diagnosis and management of over 300 clinical conditions encountered in primary care and first contact care. The topics will be updated monthly so clinicians will have access to the most up-to-date information available. Best of all, it is freely available within the UK. Electronic tables of contents from your favourite journals

You may know that the library provides a service called 'ETOCS' (Electronic Tables Of Contents) so that whenever a new issue of a journal is published, we can e-mail the contents page to your inbox. This is a good way of staying up to date with the latest research, with minimum effort.

However, the Trust has recently introduced a new e-mail system and we are having some technical problems with our mailing lists. So you may notice your alerts arriving later than usual this month. We hope that this doesn't cause you too much inconvenience.

If you haven't signed up to receive Etocs and would like to be added to our mailing lists, either pick up a form when you are in the library or e-mail us on library.enquiries@stockport.nhs.uk letting us know which journal alerts you would like to receive. As soon as our IT issue has been resolved, your e-mail address will be added to our mailing lists and you should start receiving alerts.

Journals for 2012

You will be aware that budgets are not increasing and we are being asked to make savings. We are going to be reviewing our purchasing of journals and UpToDate. We will be seeking the views of users via an online survey. This will be sent out to our newsletter list, other email lists, and posted on our Intranet site in the very near future.

Please take the time to fill this out and accept our apologise if you get it more than once. We only want you to complete it once.

These decisions are always very difficult and there will be people who feel their essential journal has not been repurchased. For online journals, we will take into account the number of downloads for the last 2 years, the quality of the journal and the access to other journals in your area. A further balance has to be made between buying a bundle (the cheapest overall method) such as the Wiley collection and buying single titles which can cost upwards of £1000.

Welcome to our colleagues in Tameside and Glossop

With Tameside and Glossop Community staff joining Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, we are entering an interesting phase in the Library Service. We welcome two new (to us but both very experienced) library staff who run the library based in NHS Oldham.

A reminder to those staff who are now Stockport staff,

** you still have the same access to library staff and library resources at NHS Oldham as before

** you are entitled to attend any of our training courses (free) as described in another item

** you will be moved over to become Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Athens members with access to our full collection of journals

** you may join the physical library based in Stepping Hill Hospital, use the study space and borrow books

There will be changes in how the services are run but we will keep you posted as these changes are implemented

Free access to information on E. coli bacteria

The publisher Springer is offering free access to all its journal articles and book chapters relating to E. coli bacteria. More than 400 scientific articles on E. coli are available for download. Access to the research articles will remain free of charge until the 1st September 2011.

Renewing and returning books the easy way

** Don't forget you can bring your books back out of hours by dropping them off in the Book Box in the Internet Cafe by the Staff Restaurant. Ask in the library for further details.


** Books can also be renewed by phone (419 4690) or by email library.enquiries@stockport.nhs.uk . You can renew up to 10 times like this without bringing in your books provided no other user has requested them.


** The first 3 reminders are sent by email so if you get letters, send us your email address to enable this facility

NHS Evidence developments

The NHS Evidence site continues to develop. If you are using the www.library.nhs.uk link you will find it takes you to a page of NHS Evidence. So what are the points to note?

1. The sign in at the top left hand side IS NOT AN ATHENS LOGIN. It is the sign in to allow you save searches from the front page and to customise the site for your use. You need to register for this separate from Athens.

2. On the front page you can enter your search as you would in Google. Remember " a phrase can be put in inverted commas" to find the exact phrase. Evidence is presented by relevance but can also be presented by date. Filters are available on the left hand side.

3. On the right hand side are links to other parts of the site:

A-Z of Topics: browse the list of clinical and medical topics divided up in to areas such as Guidance; Commissioning; Information for the Public; Medicines; Ongoing Research

Journals and Databases: Athens registration and sign on; NHS online resources such as books and journals; Health Databases Advanced Search; Cochrane Library link

Training Sessions

All Stockport based staff and students, including those who were previously employed by Tameside and Glossop, are entitled to attend our training sessions for FREE. There are courses in June and July but non in August. They start again in September and are all delivered in Pinewood House. They are all hands on sessions. Please ring 419 4690 to book a place.

NICE Pathways

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has launched an online tool that brings together all of its connected guidance in an electronic flowchart. NICE Pathways will allow users to see at a glance everything NICE has set on a specific condition across a care pathway.

PubMed Health - new resource!

PubMed Health is a clinician-focused, comprehensive health resource from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). It contains up-to-date information overviews on diseases and conditions, drugs, treatment options and healthy living. There is also a section on comparative effectiveness research, which evaluates the evidence available on the benefits and harms of different treatment options for different groups of people.

Annual Evidence Updates for March

NHS Evidence Specialist Collections produce Annual Evidence Updates (AEUs), which highlight good quality evidence from a search of research evidence on a particular topic over a 12 month period. They may also include user-friendly summaries written by relevant experts and links to guidelines, secondary research and primary research. NHS Evidence does the literature search so you don't have to!

Prostate cancer

The following commentaries will be available:

Hearing disorders

A concise summary of the latest guidance and systematic reviews, combined with a list of current therapeutic uncertainties to prioritise future research.

Critical Illness Rehabilitation

This AEU will cover the physical and non-physical consequences of critical illness including muscle weakness, anxiety and cognitive impairment

Retinal vein occlusions

This update will be restricted to systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The RCTs of note concerning the treatment of macular oedema in retinal vein occlusion are the SCORE, CRUISE, BRAVO and OZURDEX studies.

21st March

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

This AEU will present the results of the Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Project Team’s systematic search to update the results of the 2010 update.

Chest pain of recent onset

Assessment and investigation of recent onset chest pain, and discomfort of suspected cardiac origin . Critical appraisal of new systematic reviews and randomised trials covering the spectrum from assessment to early management of this condition.

28th March

Multiple Sclerosis

Guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading MS experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance.

Electronic Books

The library now has fulltext access to all the Oxford Handbooks (medical and nursing) and the Emergencies in... series. You can access them by going to http://oxfordmedicine.com/ and logging in to the website with your NHS Athens username and password. Please contact the library if you do not have an Athens account.

Physical Books

Recently we have been awarded some funding for books for medical students and many of these books will also be of interest to staff. For instance we have now bought any 2010 / 2011 editions of the ABC and Lecture Notes collections.

Keeping our book stock up to date is very difficult within the current library budget. We buy those books that people recommend or replace older copies if a new edition of a well used book is published. Do make suggestions so that we buy the books that are best for you! NICE / BMJ learning educational tools

NICE / BMJ Learning educational tools are now retrievable via NHS Evidence. They are a range of online education tools that NICE has developed in collaboration with BMJ Learning. Users are taken to an introduction page for each learning tool and need to sign in to access the tools. As well as individual conditions e.g. smoking cessation, venous thromboembolism, they also cover putting guidance into practice e.g.
