Some useful free resources from the Open University

Emerald Health Care Management Collection trial

The trial will run from Monday 20th September – Friday 22nd October and will use Athens logons. For Stockport staff unfamiliar with Athens logons we will be able to provide a username and password.

Needlestick injuries - a new article by a member of our staff


Congratulations to Jean Rogers, Practice Education Facilitator at Stepping Hill Hospital, whose article on needlestick injuries is on the cover of the August 11th issue of the Nursing Standard.

Her article is called ‘Venous thromboprophylaxis: reducing needlestick injury’, and can be found in the Nursing Standard, volume 24, issue 49, pages 35-41. Centre for Workforce Intelligence (CfWI) new web portal

The Centre for Workforce Intelligence (CfWI) is the new national authority on workforce planning and development providing advice and information to the NHS and social care system. It provides an easily accessible route to NHS and social care planners, clinicians and commissioners seeking workforce planning and development expertise to improve NHS and social care services.

Wiley journals - a useful tip!

When accessing a journal provided by Wiley Online Library, please be aware that you need to log in with your Athens account BEFORE finding your article. To log in, click on Institutional login in the top right hand corner of the journal`s homepage. Then click on Go to Athens and type in your Athens username and password. You can then browse the issues and locate the article you want in the usual way.

Library downtime in the hospital

The IT department has scheduled updates of various computer systems around the hospital on Saturday 21st August. The library catalogue and the photocopier / printer in the library will be unavailable from 8 - 9 am on Saturday while this essential maintenance is being carried out. This will occur on the 3rd Saturday of each month from now on.

In 2008, this journal changed its name to Diagnostic Histopathology, and your Stockport Athens account will give you fulltext access from 2008 up to the current issue.

E-books: new version of MyiLibrary

If you have an Athens account, you have access to several hundred e-books via MyiLibrary. There is a wide variety of titles - medical, nursing, and also non-healthcare-related topics.

A new version of MyiLibrary has just been launched, which is compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 (and above), or Mozilla Firefox 3.0 (and above). If you are still using Internet Explorer 6, you may find some problems when using MyiLibrary. Upgrading to a different browser such as IE7 or Firefox should solve any issues.
