New source of images

Wellcome Library : Over 100,000 images ranging from ancient medical manuscripts to etchings by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Francisco Goya are now available for free download as hi-res images on the Welcome Library website. These older images are being released under the Creative Commons-Attribution only (CC-BY) licence.

So what is Creative commons?
It is a public copyright licence which allows you to use images freely with certain restrictions such as for non-commercial use or that you attribute the producer of the picture.  You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the licence, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licencor endorses you or your use.

For example an image saying it is CC-BY would be Creative Commons and credit the producer of the photograph.
This photograph is a heart-lung machine from the early 1950s

The following contemporary picture from the Welcome Library has the following licence CC-BY-NC-ND which is Creative Commons with  credit for the photographer for non-commerical purposes and must not be changed in anyway.  It can only be downloaded in low resolution and must have a  link to the licence  This is how you could present such an image if you were to use it for a patient leaflet within the Trust or in a piece of academic work.
