MARCH 2010

"Well, it sure wasn't very smart of me to think I didn't need my books"
The March Hare, in the TV version of Alice in Wonderland (1991)

Annual Evidence Updates for March

We know that it is very difficult for busy clinicians to keep up-to-date with the huge volume of literature that is published each year and so NHS Evidence Specialist Collections do this for you so that you don't have to!
Here are the following Annual Evidence Updates (AEUs) scheduled for March:

1st MARCH

Acne Vulgaris (NHS Evidence – skin disorders)
www.library.nhs.uk/skin
This is the fourth Annual Evidence Update on Acne Vulgaris. It includes the results of a search for new guidance and systematic reviews published since the last AEU in March 2009, and an overview of "what's new" by Professor Hywel Williams and Dr Emma Smith.

Dysmenorrhoea and Endometriosis (NHS Evidence – women’s health)
www.library.nhs.uk/womenshealth
NHS Evidence - women's health launched two AEUs on 1st March: the fourth Annual Evidence Update on Endometriosis and the second Annual Evidence Update on Dysmenorrhoea. Focusing on the investigation and management of both conditions, these evidence updates aim to provide clinicians with up-to-date summaries of the latest evidence.

8th MARCH

Multiple sclerosis (NHS Evidence – neurological conditions)
www.library.nhs.uk/neurological
The Neurological Conditions Specialist Collection Project Team has carried out a systematic literature search on Multiple Sclerosis to identify all high level evidence published since the date of the last Multiple Sclerosis AEU in 2008, including guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading MS experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by reviewers, will be freely available on the site at www.library.nhs.uk/neurological from 8th March. This year the Project Team has also begun to identify uncertainties in research to contribute to the DUETs project (see www.library.nhs.uk/duets for more details).

Prostate cancer (NHS Evidence – cancer)
www.library.nhs.uk/cancer
This will be the third annual evidence update on prostrate cancer prepared by NHS Evidence – cancer. It will include the systematic reviews and guidance that have been published since March 2009.

15th MARCH

Critical illness rehabilitation (NHS Evidence – surgery, anaesthesia, perioperative & critical care)
www.library.nhs.uk/theatres
This update reviews evidence published between June 2008 and December 2009, using the NICE Guideline ‘Rehabilitation after critical illness’ (CG083) as its reference document. It covers the physical and non-physical consequences of critical illness including muscle weakness, anxiety and cognitive impairment. The evidence will be accompanied by peer-reviewed expert commentaries.

Hearing disorders (NHS Evidence – ENT and audiology)
www.library.nhs.uk/ent
Research on hearing disorders continues to proliferate and this evidence update will present a concise summary of the latest expert-reviewed primary and secondary research, combined with a list of current therapeutic uncertainties to prioritise future research. Multiple databases have been searched to capture all emerging evidence for the period January-December 2009.

Retinal vein occlusions (NHS Evidence – eyes and vision)
www.library.nhs.uk/eyes
Guidance from The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and NICE formed the benchmark for the AEU and the following topics have been covered:

Epidemiology
Diagnosis
Management of Central Retinal Vein Occlusion
Management of Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion

Topics will be supported by commentaries written by The Royal College of Ophthalmologists Retinal Vein Occlusion Guideline Group.

22nd MARCH

Inflammatory bowel disease (NHS Evidence – gastroenterology and liver diseases)
www.library.nhs.uk/gastroliver
This will be an update of last year’s AEU on inflammatory bowel disease.

Tuberculosis - on the move against TB (NHS Evidence – infections)
www.library.nhs.uk/infections
The update has been timed to coincide with World TB Day on the 24th of March.

Companion to Specialist Surgical Practice

Ever since the publication of the first edition in 1997, the "Companion to Specialist Surgical Practice" series has met the needs of surgeons in higher training and practising consultants by providing contemporary, evidence-based information on the sub-specialist areas relevant to their general surgical practice. All eight volumes are thoroughly edited and supported by evidence-based references to support key recommendations. This new fourth edition (2009) brings together the relevant state-of-the-art specialist information that the editors and authors consider important for the practising sub-specialist general surgeon.

"The Commissioner" ceases publication

The Editorial Group of "The Commissioner" have made the decision to cease publication of this bulletin. This has been an excellent resource for those of you who used it.

NHS Evidence needs user input

Redesign of Specialist Collections
One of the main aims of NHS Evidence is to engage with users and stakeholders to understand their information needs and experiences. They are currently planning a series of workshops to develop a better understanding of users’ views about the Specialist Collections and to generate ideas for the future development of these resources. We want to speak to a variety of users who work in different clinical settings and who currently use Specialist Collections, in order to gauge their views across the different resources.

What will be expected of you? You are invited to take part in several workshops and activities, which will take place over a four month period. The first session will take place during the first week in March 2010. This will be carried out in the evening and will last up to two hours. The sessions will be held at research facilities in Manchester.

Quertle: the biomedical search tool

BioMed Central, the world's largest open access publisher, has teamed up with Quertle LLC to add over 60,000 published articles to Quertle, the online biomedical search tool. Instead of simple keyword searching, this search engine uses a combination of linguistic methods to produce more relevant results. As well as searching fulltext documents from BioMed Central, it also searches PubMed, with other fulltext sources to be added in the near future. Quertle was created by biomedical scientists and chemists, to address the needs of researchers working with this technical literature.
You can try out the search engine here: http://www.quertle.info/
