A full report is avialable on the intranet.  Any comments or suggestions are always welcomed.  Please contact the Library Manager via the internal mail
Strategy 2013-16

‘Your information needs. Our priority’ is at the centre of everything we do in order that you may deliver the highest level of care

For staff to provide safe, high quality care, they must use the latest evidence-based knowledge. We ensure that they can access this through the library’s services and resources regardless of their location, job function or the time of day. Our service saves colleagues’ time and the Trust money thus helping them to deliver safe, seamless patient-centred care to the highest standards

Key priorities for 2013-14
1. Quality and Safety – Ensure our resources are up to date and match the requirement of all those working in the Trust regardless of location or job function. Present a business case for a clinical librarian service to support clinicians in providing safe, high quality, evidence-based practice

2. Communication - improved intranet and Internet sites using social media where applicable with an external catalogue available to all members

3. Service – provide top class services to all regardless of location with increased opening hours. Support the health and well-being agenda and develop working with the southern sector

4. Finance and Governance – meet the average compliance with national NHS Library standards. Look for opportunities to develop services to other organisations such as Public Health

Report on 2012-13 – Key achievements
• Reconfigured the service to the community including appointing a community librarian

• Achieved 92% compliance with national NHS library standards which is above the average

the TRIP database

Have you ever used the TRIP database to find evidence? This resource is very user-friendly, and doesn't require a password for access (although there are a lot more features available if you register for a username and password).

To do a search, type your topic in the search box and click 'Search'.
On the right hand side you can filter your results by systematic reviews, primary research, case reports, etc.

Go to the tabs along the top where you can click on images, video clips, patient information and news items, all related to your search.

There is also a DynaMed tab at the top which will link your search to DynaMed results, provided that you've registered and selected Stockport NHS Foundation Trust as your institution in your profile. Any articles from journals that we subscribe to should also have a Full Text link below the document.

If you register with the site, there is a feature called Timeline which keeps a record of your searches - this can be helpful for your continuing professional development. Also, you can click on 'CPD / CME' below a document, which will allow you to reflect about that particular piece of research - you can make notes on what you've learnt and how you will apply it in practice.

Try out a search today - go to http://www.tripdatabase.com/ and add the Trip database to your list of useful resources for high quality evidence.

Evidence updates

NICE Evidence Updates help to reduce the need for individuals, managers and commissioners to search for new evidence, and keep health and social care professionals up-to-date with new research. While Evidence Updates do not replace current accredited guidance and do not provide formal recommendations, they do highlight new evidence that health and social care professionals may wish to consider alongside current guidance. An Evidence Update Advisory Group, comprised of topic experts, reviewed the prioritised evidence and provided a commentary.

New Evidence Updates from NICE: We are pleased to inform you that Evidence Updates on ‘Surgical site infections’ and ‘Depression in children and young people’ have now been published.

accessing Wiley journals

Wiley, one of our journal providers, is currently unable to allow users to login with their Athens accounts. They are working to resolve this issue. We hope to update the Journals A-Z list as soon as we can with the correct links.

In the meantime, here is an alternative link that should help you access Wiley journals published until December 2012, which is when our subscription ended. Please follow the instructions below:

  • Click on the following link:

https://auth.athensams.net/?ath_returl=http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/login-proxy-athens%3FPage=http%3A%2F%2Fonlinelibrary.wiley.com&ath_dspid=WILEY.OL

  • Log in with your Athens username and password. This will take you to the Wiley homepage.

  • Click on the button next to 'Publication Titles' and search for your journal by the exact title.

  • The results page will show the name of the journal - click on the name and you will be taken to that journal's website, where you should have fulltext access to many of the backfiles. Remember that you won't have fulltext access to issues published in 2013 (although Wiley often makes the first issue of the year a free issue).

Changes at NICE

As a result of changes at NICE, NHS Evidence is now called 'NICE Evidence Services'.

NICE Evidence Services aim to help professionals make better and quicker evidence-based decisions and are a suite of services that provide online access to high quality, authoritative evidence and best practice. The services are:

• Evidence Search – which provides access to a unique index of selected and authoritative health and social care evidence-based information.

• Healthcare Database Advanced Search (HDAS) – which provides access via a federated search to a set of bibliographic databases purchased by NICE on behalf of the NHS.

• Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) – which provide primary care practitioners with access to evidence-based guidance on over 300 key conditions presenting in primary care.

• BNF microsite – which provides open access to BNF content across the UK.

• UK DUETS – a database of Evidence Uncertainties which provides research funders and researchers, access to the 'known unknowns' in the evidence base.

• Bulletins, Alerts and Evidence Awareness service – which helps busy professionals keep up to date with important new evidence.

March 2013

Well, it appears that winter is still with us! But there is light at the end of the horizon...

The library newsletter is sent out four times a year to current members of the library and anyone else who would like to keep up to date with the latest developments in healthcare.
We publish posts whenever we have news, so it's worth checking our blog from time to time.

New member of library staff!

Welcome to our new Assistant Librarian Stephen Edwards, who joins us following a varied career in healthcare, education and voluntary sector libraries. Stephen will have particular responsibility for helping community staff to access library resources. When he`s not out in the community you`ll be able to find him in the Education Centre Library at Pinewood House.
We are expecting great things from him when he joins our pub quiz team! :-)

Your views do count!

It was back in the autumn that we asked for your views on the library service.  A big thank you to the 346 people who responded

The microsite will have the results in full plus a more detailed analysis by April 22nd but here are some of the actions we are considering.

Opening Times
We will be investigating the implications of having one late night until 7pm.  There is an issue over the building being shut and coverage for holidays.

We are aware that parking for community staff is difficult but this is a larger issue than just for the library

Library environment
The temperature in the library was a concern. Since carrying out the survey, this has improved but we are limited by the system that is installed

Knowledge of library resources
*  Market individual resources by email to improve knowledge of them
*  For community staff organise visits by our Outreach Librarian
*  Update this blog more regularly
*  Investigate using the library catalogue to make users aware of new resources in their areas of interest

Quality of library resources
Books
*  We have removed a large number of old books and will continue to this.
*  Areas highlighted for improvement include physiotherapy,  laboratory medicine, nutrition, midwifery and anaesthesia.  We are looking for new titles in these areas
*  Provide an online form for suggesting new titles

Journals
We will be looking at revising our purchasing model for 2014 ... another survey I am afraid!

Overall
*  Majority of users are happy with the level of service and generally with the resources
* There are issues for community staff so we will be working to help them use the online resources more effectively and to provide a system for borrowing physical resources more easily

ClinicalKey trial

In April the library will be starting a trial of ClinicalKey, an evidence-based resource similar to UpToDate and Dynamed. The library staff will be promoting the trial around the hospital so look out for us and let us know if you would like more information about it. You will be able to access it with your Athens username and password for the duration of the trial. Watch this space!

So what will you be able to access during the trial?
Full text access to 523 Elsevier journals
Full text access to 1023 Elsevier books
350 clinical procedures with videso sequences
764 topics under the title of First Consult

At the end of the 2 month trial we will be seeking your views on this resource.

The National electronic Library for Medicines (NeLM) is changing

From April 2013, the National electronic Library for Medicines (NeLM) will be integrated into NHS Evidence, and NeLM will no longer exist. NICE is working in conjunction with the UK Medicines Information Service (UKMi) to create a single place for medicines information, which will be called NGS Evidence.Prescribers will be able to search NGS Evidence for high-quality, evidence-based medicines information.

A new personalised Medicines Awareness Service will also be launched in April 2013, replacing the existing NeLM newsletter. Key current awareness information can be e-mailed to you on a daily or weekly basis. More information on this service can be found here:

New Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) service

The new Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) service provided by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) will be going live in early April 2013. The new CKS service will provide summaries of the best available evidence and practical guidance on best practice in an accessible, easy to use format aimed at primary care practitioners. The website will cover a full range of primary care presentations for over 300 primary care topics when it launches. It will also introduce up to 10 new primary care topics each year.
The new CKS service will replace the existing CKS service. You will find the new service at www.cks.nhs.uk.

The GOOD NEWS!!

Yes, we do have some.
The resources that we will be keeping

A number of top journals (just a few listed here)
CORR, Stroke, Journal of Advanced Nursing, JBJS
Manual Therapy
, Cancer Nursing, Circulation

We have extended access to UpToDate via Athens which means for the first time you can access it from outside the Trust

Dynamed can be added to your mobile phone.  Follow this link for instructions and contact the library for a special code on library.enquiries@stockport.nhs.uk

BNF goes mobile too

....and finally some very exciting news.  In January we will be interviewing for a new librarian to help support those people working in the community.  We will be introducing you to our new team member in our next newsletter in March.

and the bad news

Like all parts of the organisation, we have to make our contribution to financial savings.

In the autumn of 2011 we asked the following question in an online survey:- UpToDate or journals? 94 people responded to this question with 79% (74 individuals) preferring to purchase UpToDate. For those unfamiliar with UpToDate, it is an evidence-based resource aimed to help clinicians with point of care decisions.

Purchasing for 2013
To meet our financial target for 2013 meant that a large resource would need to be cut and there were only two such resources that would give the required level of saving. These were UpToDate and the Wiley collection of journals.
Based on the survey results, I decided to cut the Wiley collection. This would allow us to
maintain the other journals and resources that we purchase.

Purchasing for 2014
I wish to review all our journals, evidence-based resources and other online resources for
2014 so that we can rebalance our resources for the new structure. Once again we will be
asking people’s views on this with a simple questionnaire. We need to know what the
absolute information essentials are for people to carry out their work safely and effectively.

I will be looking for volunteers from across the Trust to help with making the final decisions.   Postscript:  I am very sorry to lose this valuable collection which we have bought since 2006.  I tried very hard to negotiate a reduced fee but was unable to do so.  By the end of the first week in January, the journal A-Z should reflect this as will our etocs.  As a personal reflection, it would seem that our loyalty to the collection seemed to count for very little.
