This is a new health and wellbeing website featuring lots of information and advice to help those who want to make positive changes to their health and lifestyle. The site covers a range of topics including Healthy Eating, Move More, Smoking, Mental Wellbeing and Alcohol.

Why not take a look via www.healthystockport.co.uk

“The Department of Health website will move to the new single website for government in March 2013. GOV.UK is the new single website for UK Government":

“If you have a page on our current website bookmarked, don’t worry. Links will continue to work. Our current web pages will either re-direct to the new pages on GOV.UK that contain the same information, or link to an archived version of the page on The National Archives Website.”

The GOOD NEWS!!

Yes, we do have some.
The resources that we will be keeping

A number of top journals (just a few listed here)
CORR, Stroke, Journal of Advanced NursingJBJS
Manual Therapy
, Cancer Nursing, Circulation

We have extended access to UpToDate via Athens which means for the first time you can access it from outside the Trust

Dynamed can be added to your mobile phone.  Follow this link for instructions and contact the library for a special code on library.enquiries@stockport.nhs.uk

BNF goes mobile too

....and finally some very exciting news.  In January we will be interviewing for a new librarian to help support those people working in the community.  We will be introducing you to our new team member in our next newsletter in March.

and the bad news

Like all parts of the organisation, we have to make our contribution to financial savings.

In the autumn of 2011 we asked the following question in an online survey:- UpToDate or journals? 94 people responded to this question with 79% (74 individuals) preferring to purchase UpToDate. For those unfamiliar with UpToDate, it is an evidence-based resource aimed to help clinicians with point of care decisions.

Purchasing for 2013
To meet our financial target for 2013 meant that a large resource would need to be cut and there were only two such resources that would give the required level of saving. These were UpToDate and the Wiley collection of journals.
Based on the survey results, I decided to cut the Wiley collection. This would allow us to
maintain the other journals and resources that we purchase.

Purchasing for 2014
I wish to review all our journals, evidence-based resources and other online resources for
2014 so that we can rebalance our resources for the new structure. Once again we will be
asking people’s views on this with a simple questionnaire. We need to know what the
absolute information essentials are for people to carry out their work safely and effectively.

I will be looking for volunteers from across the Trust to help with making the final decisions.   Postscript:  I am very sorry to lose this valuable collection which we have bought since 2006.  I tried very hard to negotiate a reduced fee but was unable to do so.  By the end of the first week in January, the journal A-Z should reflect this as will our etocs.  As a personal reflection, it would seem that our loyalty to the collection seemed to count for very little.

STOP PRESS **** Change to charges

We last updated our charges in August 2010 and I am afraid it is time to change them again.
As from now the following charges will apply:-
  • Document (journal article) from the British Library will cost £7.50 (previously £7)
  • A book from the British Library will cost £11.50 (previously £11)
  • A renewal of a book from the British Library will cost £4.30 (previously £3.50)

ALL other charges remain the same - so there is some good news!

September 2012

This issue of the library newsletter features another interesting photo from James.

Thank you to everyone who had a go at guessing what the photo from June's newsletter was. Apparently, it was a picture of purple sprouting broccoli being cooked and turning the water purple.

No prizes for guessing what September's photo is!

New look to the Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library has a new look! However, the homepage remains the same so you won't notice anything's different until you do a search.
Users will see major changes to the layout of search pages and will be able to use new search features including:

• Auto-suggest features within both basic and MeSH (MeSH medical subject headings) search functions

• Updated display of search results and filtering options

• Ability to view search terms and results on the same page

• Ability to insert lines and add one search to one another

• Improved medical terms (MeSH) look-up feature

• Hover-over Tool Tips giving a brief explanation of the functions

More information is available online including a PowerPoint demonstration outlining the new features. And don't forget that the library offers free training sessions on the Cochrane Library and the best evidence-based resources.

Survey news

Like all services, we have to show that we are providing the service that people want in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

To aid us in this, we will be sending out a user survey to all our members, Athens users and potential service users.  Our last survey of this type went out in 2008 so it is time to seek your opinions again.  For most people, this will be an electronic survey  being delivered to you mid-October.  Please take the time to answer the survey.  Your views are valued.  We do need your input to make this the service that meets your needs (within any budgetary constraints).

Unfortunately, in our attempts to reach as many people as possible, some of you may get the survey more than once.  Accept our apologies in advance and only fill it in once!

New strategy

By June 2013, the library service will need a new strategy.

* Do you have strong views about your library service?
* Would you like to be involved in setting this strategy?
* Can you give sometime to participate in 1 or 2 meetings, possibly virtual?

If you have answered yes to all these questions, then please contact mary.hill@stockport.nhs.uk

If you have answered yes to some of these questions and would like to contribute to the strategy, email the address above with your suggestions.

Those interested in the current strategy can find it on the Library Microsite in the document section, under Other.

Cuts to journal subscriptions

The constraints on the library budget means that this year we will need to make substantial cuts to provision.   The funding available for resource purchase has effectively been reduced.

One way that this can be met is by cutting a resource that costs a lot of money which in essence is either a journal collection or a resource like UpToDate.  In the journal survey conducted in Autumn 2011, I asked, which would people prioritise: the purchase of UpToDate or journals.  80% of respondents replied they would prioritise UpToDate.  Also, although we cannot make an exact comparison in usage, it would appear that UpToDate has a greater usage at a lower cost per access.

For several years, we have looked at online journal usage and those journals that fall above a certain price per download (usage measure), have been cancelled.   At current usage figures those that are likely to be cancelled do not provide the savings needed.

If I do not find alternative funding or method of purchasing subscriptions, then I propose the following for journal subscriptions for 2013:
* Cancel the Wiley subscription (although its usage costs less per download than the criteria)
* Cancel individual subscriptions whose usage cost per download falls above the usage criteria
The consequent savings will be greater than required so with the difference
* Subscribe to those most used Wiley titles that would meet the usage criteria until the budget threshold is met

I would welcome feedback on this from all concerned.  Please contact me: mary.hill@stockport.nhs.uk (library manager)

Information Prescriptions

If you regularly give patients information about their condition, you may be interested in a new website called the Information Prescription Service, which is provided by NHS Choices. This service allows you to quickly create a package of personalised health information for your patient, which you can then print, save or e-mail.

Just select a condition or treatment from the drop-down menu. Patient-friendly information on various aspects of the condition, such as symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention, can be selected to create an 'information prescription'. This can then be saved as a pdf.

There is also an option at the beginning of the process to give the patient's postcode. If this is added, the information prescription will include any local information, such as relevant services or patient groups, located close to the patient's address.

User guides and a tutorial are available on the site. To try out the service, please click here: http://www.nhs.uk/ips

JUNE 2012

Each issue of our newsletter features a photo taken by James, who many of you will remember was a member of library staff at Stepping Hill. This month we have an intriguing picture of his, and we would like you to guess what it is! Please e-mail us with your suggestions. The prize will be a hessian bag from the library, and we will give away two - one to the person who guesses correctly (all right answers will be put into a hat) and one to the person whose suggestion makes us laugh the most! The address to send your answers to is snt-tr.Library@nhs.net. The closing date is Tuesday 10th July (which also happens to be my birthday, so you might get a piece of cake as well!)

So here it is...

Hospital Open Day 30th June

Stepping Hill Hospital is holding an Open Day on Saturday 30th June from 10am until 3pm. This year's theme is 'Fit for 2012'. The library staff will be demonstrating some informative and fun websites for visitors to try out on the computers. We'll also have a selection of books from our Self-Health collection for you to browse, and there'll be some hands-on activities for children.
So if you are planning on coming along to the Open Day with your family, please pop in and visit us in Pinewood House. We'd love to see you!

New books just in!

Some new books have arrived in the library. Here are a few titles that we hope you'll find interesting:

An introduction to cognitive behaviour therapy: skills and applications by Westbrook (2011)

Communication skills in health and social care by Moss (2012)

Advanced practice in healthcare: skills for nurses and allied health professionals by Cox (2012)

We also have a 2003 edition of this title, available online with your Athens username and password here: http://www.myilibrary.com/?id=34500&Ref=Athens

An app a day...

NICE has developed two new applications for smartphones to help healthcare professionals find information and guidance on the move.

The NICE British National Formulary (BNF) app provides easy access to the latest prescribing information from the BNF. Once you have downloaded and activated the app, you can access the content offline. The BNF will give you details of medicines prescribed within the UK, advice on prescribing and information on drug management of common conditions. You will need an NHS Athens username and password to download this app.

The NICE Guidance app allows you to browse and search for NICE guidance, arranged by conditions and public health topics. You can also select full guidance documents and bookmark individual sections of chapters for offline reference on your phone.

The links to download both apps, for Android and iphone users, are available from here: http://www.nice.org.uk/aboutnice/nicewebsitedevelopment/NICEApps.jsp

We also have an app for DynaMed, the clinical reference tool for use at the point-of-care. DynaMed Mobile is compatible with the Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, among others. You will need a DynaMed serial number from the library to download DynaMed Mobile onto your handheld device - please contact the librarians on 0161 419 5809 for more details.

New nutrition journal launched

This month sees the launch of the Journal of Nutritional Science - a peer-reviewed, open-access e-journal from the Nutrition Society. The journal will include high-quality research articles on topics in nutritional science, such as public health nutrition, dietary surveys, metabolic studies and obesity. The journal is published by Cambridge University Press and you can view the first issue here: http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayJournal?jid=JNS

"Orthoteers" - new orthopaedic resource

The library now has 10 licences for access to a comprehensive orthopaedic website called Orthoteers. This is an excellent educational resource for trainees studying for orthopaedic postgraduate exams or doing research, and is also useful for others involved in musculoskeletal medicine.

There is also a link to Junior Orthoteers which is aimed at undergraduates and junior doctors with an interest in orthopaedics. The content on this site puts more emphasis on basic musculoskeletal examination methods, clinical anatomy and common trauma and elective orthopaedic conditions.

Usernames and passwords are available from the Library Microsite on the hospital intranet, or you can phone the library on 0161 419 4690. To access Orthoteers and Junior Orthoteers, please click here: http://www.orthoteers.org/

New Self-Health collection in the library

The library has been given some external funding for a new 'Self-Health' collection. We have purchased books and DVDs on a variety of topics around health and well-being, which should be of interest to both clinical and non-clinical members of staff. We also hope that healthcare professionals will recommend some of these titles to their patients. We are always looking for suggestions from staff, so if you know of a good book which will help someone to improve their health and well-being, please let us know.

Here are just a few of the resources we have purchased so far:

We also have a selection of DVDs, such as a zumba fitness exercise kit, Rosemary Conley's Fitness Triple Pack DVD and Davina's Ultimate Target DVD. All are available for loan from the library at Stepping Hill.
