E-books - good news

MyiLibrary access has been secured for another year. Some people might have heard that it was under threat but a regional deal gives us continue access - so that is good news!

Do take some time to explore this resource and see if there is anything that meets your needs. On our external link page it is called Electronic books

Another e-book option is the provision of all the Oxford Handbooks.

All e-books can be accessed outside the Trust, 24/7 with an Athens username and password. The links can be found at this address: http://www.stockport.nhs.uk/working-for-us/library-and-it-facilities/links.aspx

Some changes to journals

We have managed to keep most of our journal collection stable this year which is always good news. The following are the major changes:
** Journal of laryngology and otology (JLO to those of us in the know) will be online only
** Current opinion in rheumatology will be online only
** Lancet will be available online (still waiting a link and instructions on how it will be accessed). The physical journal will still be available

**JAMA will no longer be available electronically but we will resume taking it physically (this was a national purchase but it is too expensive electronically for us to continue to take in that format)

Dr Foster Hospital Information

The Dr Foster Hospital Guide for 2011 has been published recently, focusing on the death rates and performance of all hospitals across England. Stepping Hill's overall Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate (HSMR) is within the expected range. It comes shortly after the new Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicators (SHMI), which were published in October, and listed us third best hospital in the North of England for our mortality rates.

Dr Foster provides useful information for all users of health services in the UK. Dr Foster's online tools and consumer guides enable both health and social care users and providers to make better informed decisions.

Pubget - a search engine for science articles

Pubget is a search engine for articles in the life sciences. It was launched in 2008 with the aim of making the process of finding, managing and analysing scientific papers easier. New papers are added to Pubget on a daily basis. There is an advanced search option, or you can browse by topic, using the pubget medical subject headings. If you have links to a university, you can save your institution under 'Settings' and access full text articles where your university has a subscription to them. The website has recently been upgraded so try a search here: http://pubget.com/

New journal coming soon - Bone & Joint Research

Bone & Joint Research (BJR) is a new orthopaedic research journal from the publishers of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. The journal, launched in October this year, will offer free access to research in the musculoskeletal sciences, covering topics such as bioengineering, regenerative medicine, cancer genetics, proteomics and clinical trials. Submissions are now open for papers, and the first articles should be published soon. Videos and podcasts will also be available.
Go to the website for more details: http://bjr.boneandjoint.org.uk/

New journals available to you!

*** The following titles will shortly be added to our online journal collection: (thanks to the Orthopaedic department)

American journal of sports medicine

Clinical orthopaedics and related research
Both are accessible using Athens

The journal Health Economics Review has recently been launched and all its content is freely available online. It's a peer-reviewed, international journal covering all aspects of health economics, such as health care financing and health policy analysis. You can view the first articles of this new journal here: http://www.healtheconomicsreview.com/

We recently had a trial of a journal collection called Medline with full text, which has now been purchased regionally. Some example titles include Pediatric endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, Injury and Alcohol research and health.

Journal survey

Thank you to the 97 people who took time to respond to the survey. It was a disappointingly low response but we have used the information to help inform our choice of journals for 2012 along with usage of the journals for 2011.

To recap: this survey asked for your choice of up to 4 journals you would consider essential to practice. It also asked if we had to make a decision between purchasing UpToDate or more journals what would you choose?

Journal purchase: Because of the low number we counted all 4 choices. The top ten journals requested were Lancet, NEJM, BMJ, Nursing standard, Journal advanced nursing, JAMA, Nursing times, American journal of surgical pathology, Anaesthesia, Anesthesia & Analgesia. Apart from JAMA we have access to all of these titles for 2012. We are unable to afford electronic access to JAMA so have bought the physical journal once again.

UpToDate or more journals? 94 people responded to this question with 79% (74 individuals) prefering to purchase UpToDate. Although this is not available directly to community staff, still more people in the community chose UpToDate compared to more journals. Anyone in the community can request topics which can be emailed to them. We have now purchased UpToDate for 2012.

Journals lost: We no longer subscribe to the European Journal of Palliative Care (lack of use). There may be changes to those we buy as bundles so always check out our A-Z of journals (report any links that do not work to us)

Trial of journal collection

Until the end of December, we are a part of a North West wide trial of a large collection of journals which are directly linked to searches using the NHS Healthcare Databases Advanced search. These will also be added to our journals A-Z.

Uncertain how to use the databases or think your technique needs improving, then come along to one of the free training sessions listed at the end of the newsletter

Free access to SAGE journals for 90 days!

The library has arranged a free trial to SAGE health science journals for the next three months. If you're employed by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust or you're a student on placement at Stepping Hill, you can access the journals with your Stockport NHS Athens account. If you work for NHS Stockport, you can come into the library and we'll log on for you. There are about 150 health science journals in the SAGE collection - click on http://online.sagepub.com/ and then browse the list. The free trial will run until the end of November.

Prodigy: a free evidence-based resource

For those of you who used CKS (or Clinical Knowledge Summaries), you'll be pleased to know that it's back as PRODIGY. If you're new to this resource, it's an online source of evidence-based information about the diagnosis and management of over 300 clinical conditions encountered in primary care and first contact care. Electronic tables of contents from your favourite journals

You may know that the library provides a service called 'ETOCS' (Electronic Tables Of Contents) so that whenever a new issue of a journal is published, we can e-mail the contents page to your inbox. This is a good way of staying up to date with the latest research, with minimum effort.

However, the Trust has recently introduced a new e-mail system and we are having some technical problems with our mailing lists. So you may notice your alerts arriving later than usual this month. We hope that this doesn't cause you too much inconvenience.

If you haven't signed up to receive Etocs and would like to be added to our mailing lists, either pick up a form when you are in the library or e-mail us on library.enquiries@stockport.nhs.uk letting us know which journal alerts you would like to receive. As soon as our IT issue has been resolved, your e-mail address will be added to our mailing lists and you should start receiving alerts.

Journals for 2012

You will be aware that budgets are not increasing and we are being asked to make savings. We are going to be reviewing our purchasing of journals and UpToDate. We will be seeking the views of users via an online survey. This will be sent out to our newsletter list, other email lists, and posted on our Intranet site in the very near future.

Please take the time to fill this out and accept our apologise if you get it more than once. We only want you to complete it once.

These decisions are always very difficult and there will be people who feel their essential journal has not been repurchased. For online journals, we will take into account the number of downloads for the last 2 years, the quality of the journal and the access to other journals in your area. A further balance has to be made between buying a bundle (the cheapest overall method) such as the Wiley collection and buying single titles which can cost upwards of £1000.

** Books can also be renewed by phone (419 4690) or by email library.enquiries@stockport.nhs.uk . You can renew up to 10 times like this without bringing in your books provided no other user has requested them.

** The first 3 reminders are sent by email so if you get letters, send us your email address to enable this facility

NHS Evidence developments

The NHS Evidence site continues to develop. If you are using the www.library.nhs.uk link you will find it takes you to a page of NHS Evidence. So what are the points to note?

1. The sign in at the top left hand side IS NOT AN ATHENS LOGIN. It is the sign in to allow you save searches from the front page and to customise the site for your use. You need to register for this separate from Athens.

2. On the front page you can enter your search as you would in Google. Remember " a phrase can be put in inverted commas" to find the exact phrase. Evidence is presented by relevance but can also be presented by date. Filters are available on the left hand side.

3. On the right hand side are links to other parts of the site:

A-Z of Topics: browse the list of clinical and medical topics divided up in to areas such as Guidance; Commissioning; Information for the Public; Medicines; Ongoing Research

Journals and Databases: Athens registration and sign on; NHS online resources such as books and journals; Health Databases Advanced Search; Cochrane Library link

Nice Pathways: see separate topic

Public Health: links to Public Health Evidence

QIPP: Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention with links to QIPP tools and Case Studies

The specialist topics and CKS are no longer available through this site.
