This e-mail newsletter brings together all the latest systematic reviews, guidelines and pathways relevant to mental health that have been published in the past 4 - 6 weeks. Cochrane Journal Club

The Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence such as systematic reviews and clinical trials, and is recognised as the gold standard in evidence-based healthcare. It has recently launched a new FREE resource called the Cochrane Journal Club to help clinicians and researchers who are presenting a paper to their journal clubs. A key article is taken from the latest issue and expanded with background information, podcasts, powerpoint slides and discussion questions. You can also ask the authors a question about the article, or sign up for alerts for other Cochrane Journal Club articles. The first topic of the Cochrane Journal Club is on Biologics for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Click on the link to view it - it could save you time!

FALLS PREVENTION - the evidence

A recent Online First article from the BMJ

Bischoff-Ferrari HA, Dawson-Hughes B, Staehelin HB, et al. (2009) Fall prevention with supplemental and active forms of vitamin D: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Conclusions: Supplemental vitamin D in a dose of 700-1000 IU a day reduced the risk of falling among older individuals by 19% and to a similar degree as active forms of vitamin D. Doses of supplemental vitamin D of less than 700 IU or serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations of less than 60 nmol/l may not reduce the risk of falling among older individuals.

We've had many enquiries from night staff and our PCT members about being able to drop off books out of hours. Thanks to the Health Care Libraries Unit we have now ordered a book return box to be situated in the Internet Cafe in the hospital.

Unfortunately there is a 2 month delivery date on this but it gives you time to check you know where to find the Internet Cafe and how to get into it. Library staff will tell you this information on production of your Library card.

Look out for the announcement of its installation.

New look Library

I think you'll be able to spot the difference. The environment is much fresher with a feeling of space. A big thank you to all who helped with ideas, muscles and fortitude! The end has really been worth it.

Difficult decisions ahead - a note from the Library Manager

We are all aware of budget constraints but journals continue to go up in price; many by much more than the current rate of inflation.

I am likely to have to make some difficult decisions over journals for 2009. I know that I will have to cut at least one journal from Elsevier as we have been quoted an exceptionally large increase unless I can renegotiate the price quoted. I will endeavour to contact those who might be affected.

Changes to DynaMed

For those of you who may not know, DynaMed is an evidence-based clinical reference tool for healthcare professionals for use primarily at the point-of-care. The information is presented in bullet points, making it easy to navigate, and it is regularly updated with the best current evidence and guidelines.

From October, access to DynaMed will change. Go to http://www.athens.nhs.uk/ and click on MyAthens. Log in using your Athens username and password. Select EBSCOhost databases from the list of resources, and the link to DynaMed will appear in the new window that opens. You will then be able to search the resource in the usual way.

Profiling Stockport Live: understanding communities and inequalities

Profiling Stockport Live is a website containing a wide range of local data about Stockport. There is information relating to health and wellbeing needs and demographic trends, such as educational attainment and housing benefit take-up. This data can often be broken down to within very small geographical areas. (All data is anonymised to protect confidentiality.)

The site also hosts two hubs: the Inequalities Evidence Hub has reports and data about the extent of inequalities in Stockport, and the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment Hub identifies trends and priorities for health and social care for 2009-2011.

Access to the website is available to Stockport Council and its partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors. Users are normally members of the Stockport Partnership. Registration is required, and you will need to give your work e-mail address (students need to supply their university e-mail address.) DYNAMED

Dynamed has been purchased by the NHS nationally but at the end of September the contract is coming to an end. We are hoping to secure funds to allow us to purchase it. If we do succeed authentication will be by Athens password, giving access to this excellent source from outside the Trust.

WE HAVE CHANGED

COME AND VISIT THE EDUCATION CENTRE LIBRARY

In August some alterations have been carried out in the Library. So why not come up to the 1st Floor in Pinewood and visit us. ALL staff members (not just medical or nursing) can join. We have a small but interesting fiction collection as well as books on management and IT and naturally a large collection of medical books.

To celebrate our new look entrance we are giving the first 20 people to borrow an item on Thursday 3rd September a rather nice hessian bag (that is the one with GMHELP on it!!!) Everyone is welcome. We are open from 9 to 5.30.

OUT OF HOURS Library key holders

Your key will continue to be necessary to enter the building and use the computers in F04. However, the library entrance is now by keypad. Either ask in the library for the code or find it on the Knowledge Zone under a news item.

Free tutorials on the Virtual Training Suite

Intute has updated the tutorials on its Virtual Training Suite. This resource offers free tutorials on the use of the Web for education and research. These focus on online academic resources and provide guidance on critically evaluating material found on the internet. The tutorials are produced by subject specialists from UK universities and are aimed at students. There are tutorials for most degree subjects, including the following:

The Wiley-Blackwell Influenza website

In response to the increased interest in the A1H1 pandemic, Wiley-Blackwell has launched Essential Resources in Influenza, an online reference website which offers free access to reviews and podcasts from the Cochrane Library, articles from journals such as The Hospitalist and Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses, plus chapters from selected books. Annual Evidence Updates for August

Every month, various specialist collections within NHS Evidence (formally the National Library for Health) publish an Annual Evidence Update (AEU) of the latest high-quality information published on a particular topic within their clinical specialty. The resources selected will include high-level evidence such as systematic reviews and clinical trials.

This month, two AEUs are scheduled for publication: Diabetic Retinopathy and Headache. They will both be launched on Monday 24th August. Public Health Interventions Cost Effectiveness Database

The Public Health Interventions Cost Effectiveness Database (PHICED) has been created for clinicians and commissioners who want to know more about the economic and health impacts of different public health programmes such as alcohol, obesity, physical activity and tobacco. The book loans allowance has changed

You can now borrow up to 6 standard loan (three-week) books.

You can still borrow 2 one-week loan books, but you will only be allowed to borrow a further 4 standard loans, as the maximum limit is 6.

However, fiction is counted separately: you can now borrow 4 fiction books.
