Research on thyroid disorders continues to proliferate and this evidence update will present a concise summary of the latest guidelines, systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials on hyperthyroidism, combined with a list of current therapeutic uncertainties to prioritise future research.

DYNAMED

Dynamed has been purchased by the NHS nationally but at the end of September the contract is coming to an end. We are hoping to secure funds to allow us to purchase it. If we do succeed authentication will be by Athens password, giving access to this excellent source from outside the Trust.

WE HAVE CHANGED

COME AND VISIT THE EDUCATION CENTRE LIBRARY

In August some alterations have been carried out in the Library. So why not come up to the 1st Floor in Pinewood and visit us. ALL staff members (not just medical or nursing) can join. We have a small but interesting fiction collection as well as books on management and IT and naturally a large collection of medical books.

To celebrate our new look entrance we are giving the first 20 people to borrow an item on Thursday 3rd September a rather nice hessian bag (that is the one with GMHELP on it!!!) Everyone is welcome. We are open from 9 to 5.30.

OUT OF HOURS Library key holders

Your key will continue to be necessary to enter the building and use the computers in F04. However, the library entrance is now by keypad. Either ask in the library for the code or find it on the Knowledge Zone under a news item.

Free tutorials on the Virtual Training Suite

Intute has updated the tutorials on its Virtual Training Suite. This resource offers free tutorials on the use of the Web for education and research. These focus on online academic resources and provide guidance on critically evaluating material found on the internet. The tutorials are produced by subject specialists from UK universities and are aimed at students. There are tutorials for most degree subjects, including the following:

Internet for Microbiology

The tutorials include practical exercises, quizzes, and a 'links basket' which allows the user to keep a record of all the websites covered in the session.

The Wiley-Blackwell Influenza website

In response to the increased interest in the A1H1 pandemic, Wiley-Blackwell has launched Essential Resources in Influenza, an online reference website which offers free access to reviews and podcasts from the Cochrane Library, articles from journals such as The Hospitalist and Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses, plus chapters from selected books. Annual Evidence Updates for August

Every month, various specialist collections within NHS Evidence (formally the National Library for Health) publish an Annual Evidence Update (AEU) of the latest high-quality information published on a particular topic within their clinical specialty. The resources selected will include high-level evidence such as systematic reviews and clinical trials.

This month, two AEUs are scheduled for publication: Diabetic Retinopathy and Headache. They will both be launched on Monday 24th August. Public Health Interventions Cost Effectiveness Database

The Public Health Interventions Cost Effectiveness Database (PHICED) has been created for clinicians and commissioners who want to know more about the economic and health impacts of different public health programmes such as alcohol, obesity, physical activity and tobacco. You can now access JAMA and Archives right back to Volume 1 Issue 1!

The journals included are:

Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

Click on this link to access JAMA and the Archives. You will need an Athens username and password. Contact the library for information on how to register for Athens.

The book loans allowance has changed

You can now borrow up to 6 standard loan (three-week) books.

You can still borrow 2 one-week loan books, but you will only be allowed to borrow a further 4 standard loans, as the maximum limit is 6.

However, fiction is counted separately: you can now borrow 4 fiction books.

The Great British Summer strikes again!

Keeping up to date - the easy way!

A good way of keeping up to date is by using RSS feeds, which means that you're alerted as soon as a website has added new information. There are various ways to receive these feeds, but the easiest way is by setting up a Google Reader account. To do this, go to http://www.google.com/reader and click on 'Create an account'. Once your account is set up, you can start adding feeds to it.

Here's one for you to try! Go to http://www.bmj.com/ and look for the RSS icon. (It's in the middle of the page, under 'Tools'.) Click on this icon and you'll get a choice of 4 different feeds. Select the RSS feed for 'Latest Articles'.

When you click on the RSS icon, a scary-looking window will appear. Don't worry! Just right-click in the address field and copy the new address.

Now go to your Google Reader account. Click on 'Add a Subscription' and paste the address into the box.

You'll then see the feed at the bottom of your list of subscriptions, like so:

You can add your new feed to an existing folder, or make a new folder, by clicking on 'Feed Settings'.

Why not give it a try? The RSS Directory is a good place to find feeds. Click on http://www.library.nhs.uk/rss/default.aspx and you can search for feeds in your chosen topic.

The demise of Dynamed

Many people have found this site very useful.

One of our consultants reckons it is the best place to check for new guidelines.

You do this by carrying out a search on your topic. If it is covered, you can then select References including Reviews and Guidelines

This is a resource that has been bought nationally and will no longer be funded after the end of September. It is unlikely that we will be able to find funding to continue to have access.

E-books

There has been an update to the MyiLibrary site which has affected our e-book links from the catalogue. Some links do not work as they should although the majority do.

You can access online books by using the link on the front of the Knowledge Zone or from the books section on the Stockport website . This will direct you to the new site. A new guide has been produced.

You can access via http://lib.myilibrary.com too. Remember to look for the Athens logon. Do NOT logon in the obvious place - the Athens login is at the bottom of the page in small writing

JUNE 2009

The sun is setting over the newsletter as we know it...

CHANGES TO THE NEWSLETTERS

Reducing staff numbers and a desire to get the right information to the right people at the right time have forced us to rethink our newsletters. Over the next 2 months we will be changing how they are delivered.


1. The final 'Show me the Evidence' is being posted today. We will in future produce a single Library Newsletter which will contain library news items and general postings for new sites which would be useful to the majority of users

2. We already have specialist feeds which help to deliver the right information to the right people. Over the next few months we are investigating making these more widely available (currently they are through the specialty guide pages on the Intranet) We will announce more information in the next general newsletter.

3. We will stop posting out a reminder as the e-mail list is becoming very large and out of date. It is very difficult for us to maintain this. We will be looking at ways to make it more readily available. Any suggestions on this will be welcome.

4. We will make the specialty feeds more readily available and looking how we can link them to your library membership. To do this we would like to know your areas of interest. Let us know now if you can. We will also be contacting you specifically about this at a later date.

5. We will review our Internet site to see if we can make this more useful within the confides of what the Foundation Trust allows.

CHANGES TO THE LIBRARY LAYOUT

We are currently working on modernising the entrance to the Library with some external funding. This is likely to result in the library being CLOSED for a few days during August. Plans are available if you wish to see them.

We had sent out a final design to a number of people but there are fire safety issues with the sliding door. So the ultimate plan may have to be different.

Our aim is to make it more welcoming and user friendly. We also are hoping to be able to reduce the cost of heating the library.

Jo is leaving us

With a mixture of 'happy for Jo' and 'sad for us', we say farewell to Jo Bates. Jo came to us as a graduate trainee in November 2007 working both here and at Macclesfield. She started her librarian course at MMU in September 2008 and remained working part time at both Trusts.

In that time she has become very skilful in the use of Web technology for library purposes. She leaves us on the 12th June and after a short holiday starts her first professional post at Macclesfield. We wish her all the very best and expect to see her quickly climbing the library ladder of success.

Our Library has FICTION - it's a FACT

29 people enrolled at the Library on Improving Working Lives and borrowed a fiction book, thus entitling them to one of our rather nice GMHeLP bags.

So with your summer holidays coming up, don't forget to come in and take a look at our collection. We also have management books and some IT help books. We're not just medical. We are for all staff and students of both Stockport Trusts. Let your colleagues know that they can join too.

But what is GMHeLP. It stands for Greater Manchester Health Libraries Project and allows you to join any other NHS health library in the Greater Manchester area. Work in Stockport but live in Tameside, you might find it useful to join Tameside Hospital library as well as Stepping Hill. Interested in cancer ... you can join Christie Hospital library. Leaflets and book marks available in the Library.

CHANGING LIBRARY

We are excited to announce that over the next few months there will be changes to the layout to the library. It may mean that the library will have to close for a few days so check the Knowledge Zone for any updates once we get into June
The changes will include

• a sliding door entrance ( ... does this mean it will be warm in the winter?)
• a repositioned and reconditioned counter giving more friendly access
• a comfy sitting area near the fiction books
• new carpeting

and a generally lighter brighter feel to the place

Use Google for your professional practice? STOP NOW and take a look at NHS Evidence @ www.evidence.nhs.uk


The search is in many ways similar to those of well-known internet search engines (like Google you can use "inverted commas" for a phrase) You enter terms in the search box, and results are returned which contain all the search terms. A feature of NHS Evidence is the use of search 'navigators' which appear on the left of the results page with your initial search results. Use these 'navigators' to rapidly filter and refine your search results.
