June 2013

Well, it may not feel like summer is here yet, but perhaps a photo from Mary's holiday in Romania will get you into that aestival mood...

The library newsletter is sent out four times a year to current members of the library and anyone else who would like to keep up to date with the latest developments in healthcare.

We publish posts whenever we have news, so it's worth checking our blog from time to time.

    Self-Health and Hospedia

The library at Pinewood House has a selection of 'Self-Health' resources which hospital staff can borrow to use with patients or for their own well-being. This collection is a snapshot of what is available from Stockport public libraries. We strive to raise awareness around the hospital of Stockport's public library service, which - among other things - is an excellent source of high-quality, reliable health information. We recently bid for some external money which has funded an advert on the Hospedia TV screens at patient bedsides. The advert is running now and should remind patients about their local library and encourage them to use the service, especially for finding health information.

    Clinical Librarian project

The library staff have been working with the Intensive Care Unit on a pilot project to support the clinical team in their workplace. Initially, a 'Clinical Librarian' attended the ward round once a week to find evidence for any questions that arose during the ward round. Over time, the project has changed so the librarian now visits ICU every day to see if the team have any clinical questions or literature search requests. The pilot has been running for almost three months and is now drawing to a close, after which time it will be evaluated. The project has been a fascinating experience for the library team, and we hope that the clinical staff have found it useful, too.

    Strategy 2013-16

Your information needs. Our priority’ is at the centre of everything we do in order that you may deliver the highest level of care

For staff to provide safe, high quality care, they must use the latest evidence-based knowledge. We ensure that they can access this through the library’s services and resources regardless of their location, job function or the time of day. Our service saves colleagues’ time and the Trust money thus helping them to deliver safe, seamless patient-centred care to the highest standards

    the TRIP database

Have you ever used the TRIP database to find evidence? This resource is very user-friendly, and doesn't require a password for access (although there are a lot more features available if you register for a username and password).

To do a search, type your topic in the search box and click 'Search'.
On the right hand side you can filter your results by systematic reviews, primary research, case reports, etc.

Go to the tabs along the top where you can click on images, video clips, patient information and news items, all related to your search.

There is also a DynaMed tab at the top which will link your search to DynaMed results, provided that you've registered and selected Stockport NHS Foundation Trust as your institution in your profile. Any articles from journals that we subscribe to should also have a Full Text link below the document.

If you register with the site, there is a feature called Timeline which keeps a record of your searches - this can be helpful for your continuing professional development. Also, you can click on 'CPD / CME' below a document, which will allow you to reflect about that particular piece of research - you can make notes on what you've learnt and how you will apply it in practice.

Try out a search today - go to http://www.tripdatabase.com/ and add the Trip database to your list of useful resources for high quality evidence.

    Evidence updates

NICE Evidence Updates help to reduce the need for individuals, managers and commissioners to search for new evidence, and keep health and social care professionals up-to-date with new research. While Evidence Updates do not replace current accredited guidance and do not provide formal recommendations, they do highlight new evidence that health and social care professionals may wish to consider alongside current guidance. An Evidence Update Advisory Group, comprised of topic experts, reviewed the prioritised evidence and provided a commentary.

New Evidence Updates from NICE: We are pleased to inform you that Evidence Updates on ‘Surgical site infections’ and ‘Depression in children and young people’ have now been published.
