Online videos - the next best thing to attending a training session
Video guides offer a convenient way to refresh your
literature searching skills. There are guides for all the stages of any
literature search:

It doesn’t take long to watch one of the guides, typically they last around two minutes. If you can’t come in for a training session, they make a handy alternative option.

Free access to all Informa journals!
The library is running a free trial of the Informa Healthcare journals collection.
The Expert Reviews Series and the Expert Opinions Series are part of this collection.
Titles include the European Journal of Physiotherapy, the Journal of Asthma, Modern Rheumatology and Seminars in Ophthalmology.
You have full-text access to all 181 journals until 31st October 2014.

Free trial to Clinical Evidence from the BMJ
Clinical Evidence is a point-of-care resource provided by
BMJ. It is an international source of the best available evidence on the effects
of common clinical interventions, similar to UpToDate and DynaMed.
We have a FREE TRIAL to this resource until the end of October 2014.

Summer is here (supposedly...!) And so is the latest edition of the library's newsletter. We are publishing it a little later than usual, so that we can welcome the new doctors who have arrived in the Trust, as well as other new staff members. Hello to you all!
The photo this month was taken by an ex-member of library staff, and photographer extraordinaire, James Allen. Thanks to James, as always, for letting us use his beautiful images for our blog.
The library newsletter is sent out four times a year to current members of the library and anyone else who would like to keep up to date with the latest developments in healthcare. We publish posts whenever we have news, so it's worth checking our blog from time to time.
Our first 10 stamps person
Our Library Loyalty Bookmark rewards our loyal users. Borrow a book and have your bookmark stamped. After 5 stamps you'll receive a sweet. When you have 10 stamps you can enjoy a drink and a biscuit from the library.
Our first loyal user to get a cup of tea and a biscuit is Melissa Hanton, a visiting medical student from Canada. As well as borrowing medical texts, Melissa was an avid fiction reader and had read much of our crime fiction in her 6 months stay at Stockport.

Top Reader
Our top reader since April is Teresa Cuthbert who is a University of Manchester midwifery student. Congratulations to her! She will receive a very nice hessian bag. Teresa has been reading a lot around nursing research.

Open Day at Stepping Hill
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust had an open day on Saturday 19th July. The theme of the day was 'Back to the Future' and the library had its own stand called 'The Information Portal'.
We ran a 'Past to Present' quiz, matching the photos with the year - apparently it was very tricky! There was also a 'Time Machine', which was a reminiscence box full of books and photos of times past. This was kindly loaned to us by Stockport Public Libraries. Children could colour an array of body parts (due to a 'Teleporter Malfunction') and play some health-related computer games. Whack-a-Bone and Poke-a-Muscle were particularly popular, although some adults preferred the Healthy Eating Self-Assessment or Health Talk Online.
However, the star attraction was a skull which had been printed out on a 3D printer. We had an accompanying display about 3D printing, including a video of a patient whose titanium hip joint was printed on a 3D printer. If you would like to take a look at our skull, it has now taken up residence in the library in Pinewood House!
Overall, the day proved a great success for the Trust with several hundred people dropping in to take a look at the attractions. For us it was a chance to explain to members of the public how the library can contribute to medical services. There was the additional benefit of a steady stream of colleagues passing through as they took a break from their own open day duties.
New books in the library

Resources for staff working with dementia patients
Around the world, 44 million people are living with dementia, and this number is predicted to nearly double every 20 years, with a new case diagnosed every 4 seconds* .
If you work with patients with dementia, or if you know of someone with dementia, you'll find the dementia resources in your library helpful. We have a number of books covering various aspects of the condition - ranging from living well after diagnosis and coping with early onset dementia, to guides for carers and stories of experiences from family members of dementia sufferers. Trust staff can borrow these books and show them to patients' families if they are looking for further information and advice. All the books in the library at Pinewood House are also available in Stockport Libraries, so family members can borrow these titles - and many more - from their local public library.

Changes to the journal Blood
The American Society of Hematology has changed its address for Athens access to the journal Blood.

You will be asked to type your Athens username and password, and then you will have complete fulltext access from 1946 to the current issue.

Free trial extended to more journals
Nature, and 36 affiliated journals (such as Nature Medicine and Nature Reviews Cancer) are included.
Elsevier Science are including 147 of its Finch Medical Research titles, such as Experimental Eye Research, Research in Microbiology, the European Journal of Pharmacology, Spine Deformity, and Clinical Biochemistry.
All these journals are available with your Athens username and password. You can search for them on a list of journals here: http://www.library.nhs.uk/booksandjournals/journals/default.aspx
Furthermore, the links to fulltext articles will appear when you do a search of the healthcare databases (like Medline and CINAHL).
If you do not have an Athens account, please contact the library on 0161 419 4690.
Other journal providers are offering free fulltext as part of this trial, but access is only available from NHS computers, and not by Athens. The providers below are all included in the NHS Pilot.
The Medical Collection from Oxford University Press is offering fulltext access to 88 titles, such as Cardiovascular Research, Annals of Oncology, Occupational Medicine and International Journal for Quality in Health Care.
Twenty six Annual Reviews journals are part of the free trial, such as the Annual Review of Biochemistry, and the Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
The Merck Index is also included.
The NHS Pilot will run until 31st March 2015.
Practising Midwife - now available online
The library used to have a print subscription to the Practising Midwife, but this leading journal is now available electronically so you can access it from anywhere. All you need is to login with your Athens username and password here: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/mesl/tpm
If you don't have an Athens account, you can register online from an NHS computer here: https://openathens.nice.org.uk/
The archives of our electronic subscription go back to 2011, but the library at Pinewood House has print copies from 2006 - 2013.
You can also request an 'etoc' from the library - an electronic table of contents. So every month we will send you the contents page of the new issue so that you can keep up to date with the latest research very easily. A Guide to Little-Known Image Collections with Millions of Free, Hi-Res Images is a useful blog which not only includes a link to the Wellcome Library collection but some more contains links to a number of other collections

It also shows you how to search on Google to only return images which are copiable.
Google’s
Advanced Search form allows you to specify usage rights in your search so
you can be sure to return results that match your preferred license.
Changes to the Cochrane Library
From the 28th June the Cochrane Library will have enhanced features which include
- better readability
- enhanced navigation
- improved functionality with new browser tools
- but best of all it will adapt to any device - desktop, tablet, or mobile, to give the optimal reading experience

Draft Library and Knowledge Services Annual Report
We have changed the format of our annual report to make it more succinct but still reflect the service provided. In particular, we are reporting on our performance indicators against our library standards for the first time. If you wish to comment on the report or suggest developmental needs for the service, you will find the report on the Library Microsite under documents. Eight million articles and book chapters freely available online!
Leading medical publisher Springer is making its Hospital and Health collection available to NHS staff until the end of October 2014. The collection comprises 1800 journals and 40,000 book titles, including the just-published Classic Papers in Orthopaedics.

• choose Institutional/Athens login
• choose NHS from the Select your institution drop-down menu

Welcome to our Easter edition of the Library newsletter. We're publishing a little later than usual as a lot of things have been happening in the library over the last month or so, such as our new self-service machine in the library, and a refurbishment of our office. You can read more about it in the posts below.
We've also got a post about using the Wellcome Library as a source of images, and this month's picture is taken from that website.

Our BIG news ~ we are now self-service
You can now issue, return and renew your own books along with paying any fines! We have already had some comments on the ease of use.
TO BORROW ITEMS
You must have your blue library card.
Forgotten or lost it? Ask a member of staff for help
Step 1 ~ Select what you want to borrow Step 2 ~ Take them to the self-service machine on the counter. Press the screen to select you are borrowing
Step 3 ~ Put your blue library card under the scanner (as shown here), barcode side up.
Step 4 ~ Place your books on the black pad. It can read multiple records at once. Each book title will appear on the screen.
Step 5 ~ Once all items have been scanned, press finish and collect your receipt containing the return
Don't forget to ask a member of staff to stamp your loyalty book mark!
TO RETURN ITEMS
Step 1 ~ Press the screen to select you are returning
Step 2 ~ Place all items on the black pad. Check all are returned
Step 3 ~ Select to have a receipt and place your items in the box provided
If you have any fines you can pay them now!

Medical Masterclass has a new-look website
The Royal College of Physicians has designed an all-new website for Medical Masterclass with new features and a brand-new bank of mock MRCP (UK) Part 1 and Part 2 written exam questions.
Please note that your previous exam history will be lost as a result of the changeover. However, you will be able to build up a new exam history and see how your score compares with other users.

Case-based simulations are also available from any Trust computer - go to the Start menu, click on Trust Applications and then select Medical Masterclass. This will start 'Patient Simulator', which allows you to choose elements of a patient's history and examination. Based upon that information, you can determine a diagnosis, tests or procedures and management of the patient. No username or password required for Patient Simulator.
New charges for interlibrary loans
Unfortunately the British Library has raised its charges for articles and books. We have managed to keep our prices the same for 18 months but we have had to raise our prices for the new financial year.
The cost of requesting an article will now be £9. The cost of borrowing a book for a six-week loan will now be £12.50. If a renewal is required after this time, the charge will be £4.45.
However, the good news is that we are keeping our prices the same for articles and books from NHS libraries around the region. So if the article or book you need is available from a library in the north west, the charge will still be £1.
Clinical audit support available from NICE
Did you know that NICE guidance now comes with audit support such as clinical audit tools?
Let's take a look at the Head Injury clinical guidelines that were issued in January 2014:

On this page on the right hand side, you'll see a menu with the headline 'Implementation tools and resources'. Below this you'll see 'Clinical audit tools'. (Some guidelines will say 'Audit support' instead, or 'Electronic audit tools').
The clinical audit tool comes with audit standards, a spreadsheet for data collection, a clinical audit report for you to complete, along with an action plan.
Not all clinical guidelines come with audit support but many do, so take a look at the NICE website and see whether the NICE guidance you're interested in has this feature.

Library loyalty bookmark
The next time you borrow a book, pick up a special loyalty bookmark. Each time you borrow books, you can get a stamp for your bookmark. When you've collected five stamps, you can dig into the library's sweetie tin for a chocolate. When you've collected 10 stamps, the library staff will make you a cup of coffee or tea! Renewing and returning books don't count, and neither do multiple visits on the same day. We have already had a couple of people claim their free chocolate. Let's see who's the first person to get a free drink!
Critical Appraisal Training at Wythenshawe and Stepping Hill
The library at Wythenshawe Hospital is running a session on Critical Appraisal on Monday 28th April from 1pm to 3pm.
The training will take place in the Committee Room, Education and Research Centre.
The training session is free and Stepping Hill Hospital staff are welcome to attend.

Guidelines in Practice - app now available
Guidelines in Practice is a resource for healthcare professionals who are interested in implementing national guidelines locally, and practising evidence based medicine.
Healthcare professionals can register online to have access to the guideline summaries and other resources:
