MARCH 2009

Hello everyone!
We haven't got any photos of March hares for you, I'm afraid, so here's a scene from the city instead, just for a change...

REMOVABLE MEDIA SECURITY

Devices which can be plugged into PCs and carry patient data represent a risk to the Trust from unauthorised access to such data and potential loss. In 2008, the government issued directives that each organisation should take robust action to prevent loss of confidential patient data. In line with any other Trusts and government departments, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is taking measures to reduce the risk of this type of loss.

We are introducing controls which will prevent Trust PCs from writing to
removable media such as USB memory sticks. This obviously has implications for the Library and we are in discussion with Information Governance staff to see how we can manage this within the Library for our members, both staff and students. We will keep you posted on this development.

CHARGE INCREASE

Over the last 5 years we have held the price of Inter Library Loans (ILL) and are now subsidising the cost of this service. For 2009 we have provided even more online journal titles which you can download at any time from any internet linked computer. To enable us to keep supporting this level of service we need to increase the price of ILL.

So here is the bad news as from the 1st April 2009

NHS EVIDENCE

Just as you are getting use to the National Library for Health (NLH), it will be changing in line with recommendations in the Darzi report. In the report, High Quality For All, (published June 2008), NICE was asked to establish NHS Evidence.

What is NHS Evidence?
NHS Evidence is a web-based service that will help people find, access and use high-quality clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice. Built around a powerful search engine, the service will consolidate information from a wide range of sources in one central portal.
The
blueprint for NHS Evidence, outlining the strategic aims of the service, can be found on the NICE website.

How will it affect NLH?
NHS Evidence will build on existing services currently delivered by the National Library for Health. The existing services, collections and staff of NLH will be transferred into the new service.

When will NHS Evidence be available?
NHS Evidence will launch in April 2009. Additional functionality and content will be added in future versions of NHS Evidence. Initially both sites will run in para

NOTE: it now has an excellent new search facility which will allow you to see what journals we have access to which contain a certain word in the title. Try typing in surgery to see the results.

DECEMBER 2008

Season's greetings from James!

Access to the Royal Marsden Hospital Manual

A 3-year deal has been signed for online access to the 7th edition (2008) of the Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures. There is a possibility that the online version will be Athens compliant, which means that Foundation Trust and PCT staff will be able to access it from a non-NHS computer, using their Athens username and password. We are waiting to hear if this will be a definite feature, so watch this space!
For those of you who prefer physical rather than electronic access, you will be happy to know that some print copies of the manual have also been purchased for the library.

Journals for 2009

Many thanks to all who filled in our online survey. So why did we do this?

In 2008, the NHS bought the whole of the BMJ journal collection and JAMA and its archives for online use across the NHS in England. We had previously bought this for you and so this money became available to purchase other journals. Also Blackwell publishers were bought by Wiley and we believed that they might alter how they sold the Blackwell collection.

At the end of October we learnt that Wiley will continue with an enhanced Wiley-Blackwell collection at a price we can afford. The enhancement includes some top titles from Wiley. The following are the new titles which were requested.

* Arthritis and Rheumatism (previously physically taken);

* British journal of surgery;

* Diabetes Metabolism Research and Reviews;
* Hepatology;

* International Wound Journal

All told 29 titles were requested from this collection, including the most requested journal. When we calculated the cost of these journals it came to considerably more than the collection.

We are continuing to work on the other journals to buy and are looking at those areas which are poorly provided at the moment and seeing what is the best deal we can do with the remaining money.

Finally, the vote for keeping UpToDate at the expense of more journals was resoundedly voted for by 68% of respondents. We will continue for another year although it is paid for in dollars ....

The third edition of this book, which focuses on the diagnosis and clinical management of stroke.

Clinical skills made incredibly easy
This is the first UK edition of the book. The step-by-step instructions and the illustrations make it very user friendly.

This book is accompanied by a CD of heart and breath sounds, to be used in conjunction with the text.
