The library newsletter is sent out four times a year to current members of the library and anyone else who would like to keep up to date with the latest developments in healthcare.

Welcome to our colleagues in Tameside and Glossop

With Tameside and Glossop Community staff joining Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, we are entering an interesting phase in the Library Service. We welcome two new (to us but both very experienced) library staff who run the library based in NHS Oldham.

A reminder to those staff who are now Stockport staff,

Free access to information on E. coli bacteria

The publisher Springer is offering free access to all its journal articles and book chapters relating to E. coli bacteria. More than 400 scientific articles on E. coli are available for download. Access to the research articles will remain free of charge until the 1st September 2011.

Renewing and returning books the easy way

** Don't forget you can bring your books back out of hours by dropping them off in the Book Box in the Internet Cafe by the Staff Restaurant. Ask in the library for further details.


** Books can also be renewed by phone (419 4690) or by email library.enquiries@stockport.nhs.uk . You can renew up to 10 times like this without bringing in your books provided no other user has requested them.


** The first 3 reminders are sent by email so if you get letters, send us your email address to enable this facility

NHS Evidence developments

The NHS Evidence site continues to develop. If you are using the www.library.nhs.uk link you will find it takes you to a page of NHS Evidence. So what are the points to note?

1. The sign in at the top left hand side IS NOT AN ATHENS LOGIN. It is the sign in to allow you save searches from the front page and to customise the site for your use. You need to register for this separate from Athens.

2. On the front page you can enter your search as you would in Google. Remember " a phrase can be put in inverted commas" to find the exact phrase. Evidence is presented by relevance but can also be presented by date. Filters are available on the left hand side.

3. On the right hand side are links to other parts of the site:

A-Z of Topics: browse the list of clinical and medical topics divided up in to areas such as Guidance; Commissioning; Information for the Public; Medicines; Ongoing Research

Journals and Databases: Athens registration and sign on; NHS online resources such as books and journals; Health Databases Advanced Search; Cochrane Library link

Training Sessions

All Stockport based staff and students, including those who were previously employed by Tameside and Glossop, are entitled to attend our training sessions for FREE. There are courses in June and July but non in August. They start again in September and are all delivered in Pinewood House. They are all hands on sessions. Please ring 419 4690 to book a place.

NICE Pathways

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has launched an online tool that brings together all of its connected guidance in an electronic flowchart. NICE Pathways will allow users to see at a glance everything NICE has set on a specific condition across a care pathway.

PubMed Health - new resource!

PubMed Health is a clinician-focused, comprehensive health resource from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). It contains up-to-date information overviews on diseases and conditions, drugs, treatment options and healthy living. There is also a section on comparative effectiveness research, which evaluates the evidence available on the benefits and harms of different treatment options for different groups of people.

Annual Evidence Updates for March

NHS Evidence Specialist Collections produce Annual Evidence Updates (AEUs), which highlight good quality evidence from a search of research evidence on a particular topic over a 12 month period. They may also include user-friendly summaries written by relevant experts and links to guidelines, secondary research and primary research. NHS Evidence does the literature search so you don't have to!

7 March

Prostate cancer

The following commentaries will be available:

Hearing disorders

A concise summary of the latest guidance and systematic reviews, combined with a list of current therapeutic uncertainties to prioritise future research.

Critical Illness Rehabilitation

This AEU will cover the physical and non-physical consequences of critical illness including muscle weakness, anxiety and cognitive impairment

Retinal vein occlusions

This update will be restricted to systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The RCTs of note concerning the treatment of macular oedema in retinal vein occlusion are the SCORE, CRUISE, BRAVO and OZURDEX studies.

21st March

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

This AEU will present the results of the Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Project Team’s systematic search to update the results of the 2010 update.

Chest pain of recent onset

Assessment and investigation of recent onset chest pain, and discomfort of suspected cardiac origin . Critical appraisal of new systematic reviews and randomised trials covering the spectrum from assessment to early management of this condition.

28th March

Multiple Sclerosis

Guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading MS experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance.

Electronic Books

The library now has fulltext access to all the Oxford Handbooks (medical and nursing) and the Emergencies in... series. You can access them by going to http://oxfordmedicine.com/ and logging in to the website with your NHS Athens username and password. Please contact the library if you do not have an Athens account.

Physical Books

Recently we have been awarded some funding for books for medical students and many of these books will also be of interest to staff. For instance we have now bought any 2010 / 2011 editions of the ABC and Lecture Notes collections.

Keeping our book stock up to date is very difficult within the current library budget. We buy those books that people recommend or replace older copies if a new edition of a well used book is published. Do make suggestions so that we buy the books that are best for you! NICE / BMJ learning educational tools

NICE / BMJ Learning educational tools are now retrievable via NHS Evidence. They are a range of online education tools that NICE has developed in collaboration with BMJ Learning. Users are taken to an introduction page for each learning tool and need to sign in to access the tools. As well as individual conditions e.g. smoking cessation, venous thromboembolism, they also cover putting guidance into practice e.g.

Our mailing list has become out of date. We, therefore, are making this the last posting to be sent to our old list and the first one sent to our new list. So "Good-bye" and "Welcome"

Changes to Journals

With a journal budget no larger than last year but with prices increasing, the cuts have effectively arrived. The usage of the electronic journals has been reviewed and those journals showing the least usage have been cut. This is the fairest way but it does mean individually purchased journals are more vulnerable.

For 2011, we will no longer have a subscription to the following journals:
i American Journal of Ophthalmology
i Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons (includes Bulletin)

i British Journal of General Practice

i Journal of Bone and Mineral Research

i Laryngoscope

i Miders Midwifery Digest
i Technic

We are cancelling the physical copy of i BMJ i but you still have online access with Athens

We are exchanging i Physiotherapy for i Manual Therapy

We will have 2 new titles to our A-Z both paid for by non-library budgets.

i International Journal of Clinical Skills

A number of groups have requested new journals but we are currently unable to meet these requests. They have been added to a list along with the cancelled titles to review at the end of the financial year should there be any budget remaining.

We are still in negotiation over the Wiley collection. If the price is too high then cuts will have to be made to these titles too.

6 Book Challenge

** Haven't read a fiction book in years?
** Never liked reading?
** Find it difficult to give yourself some 'me' time with a book?

Why don't you take the 6 book Challenge to read 6 books before the end of June 2011? Start by signing up at your library in Pinewood House.

All staff can join - just bring along your staff ID badge. We have a compact but interesting selection of fiction and autobiography to suit most tastes.

The Reading Agency's scheme is aimed at those wishing to return to reading for pleasure or those less confident adult readers. Last year it attracted 13,500 people through libraries, adult education, colleges, prisons and workplaces. Participants are invited to read six books and record their reading in a diary in order to receive incentives and ultimately a certificate and a chance to enter a national prize draw. The Six Book Challenge has already been used to good effect by the NHS Trust Library at Royal Bolton.

Visit the Library on the 1st floor of Pinewood House, open between 9 - 5.30 (Mon - Thurs) and Fri 9 - 4.30. ALL staff welcome.

TILT (Today I learnt that..)

The TRIP database has created a free learning tool called TILT - 'Today I learnt that...'

This is an innovative project which allows you to browse medical subjects, and see what topics other clinicians have found useful and interesting. You can also add your own posts to record your personal learning and reflections. Users can build up a portfolio of education which may be suitable for use in appraisals. Since it is a brand-new resource, there has been little feedback so far, but hopefully it will develop into a useful repository of clinical learning. Why not try it and let us know what you think? Annual Evidence Updates for December

If you've ever done a literature search, you'll know how time-consuming it can be. The Specialist Collections in NHS Evidence produce Annual Evidence Updates (AEUs) which undertake a review of all the literature published on a specific topic within the last 12 months. So if there is an update on a topic in your field of interest, it will save you time AND keep you up-to-date with the latest evidence! Take a look at the updates published this month - you might have an early present...


6th December

Alcoholic liver disease (NHS Evidence - gastroenterology and liver diseases)
Alcohol misuse produces a spectrum of liver injury ranging from simple fatty change through alcoholic hepatitis to cirrhosis and, in some 20% of individuals, to hepatocellular carcinoma. The update will present an overview of the best systematic reviews from the past year, along with commentaries from experts in the field. There will also be links to useful policy documents and other items of interest.

Malignancies post kidney transplant (NHS Evidence - kidney diseases and male urogenital disorders)
This update on post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) has reviewed the literature published over the last year and found relevant systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials and cohort studies. It will also assess the impact of the new evidence published since the introduction of the BSH/BTS guidelines for the diagnosis and management of PTLD in June 2010.

CAM for lower back pain (NHS Evidence - complementary and alternative medicine)
This update includes a list of systematic reviews, meta-analyses and selected randomised controlled trials published since September 2009, along with commentaries from experts.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia (NHS Evidence - genetic conditions)
It is over two years since NICE clinical guidance 71 'Identification and management of familial hypercholesterolaemia' was published and the topic continues to generate interest among healthcare professionals. This update includes a list of relevant guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and selected randomised controlled trials published in the last year, together with a commentary written by a relevant expert.

Headache (NHS Evidence - neurological conditions)
The Project Team has carried out a systematic literature search on headache to identify all high level evidence published since the date of the last Headache AEU in August 2009, including guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading headache and migraine experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by reviewers, will be freely available on the site. The project team have also identified uncertainties in research to contribute to the DUETs database (see www.library.nhs.uk/duets for more details).

Spinal diseases (NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics)
NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics in conjunction with NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal have produced an Annual Evidence Update on Spinal Diseases. As in previous years, we have included guidelines and systematic reviews which have been published within the last 12 months. This Annual Evidence Update includes reviews covering disc surgery and minimally invasive surgery along with various therapies and treatments. This topic should be of particular interest to all health professionals working in this field.

White paper update for all NHS North West Staff

Please note that the DH business plan (2011 – 2015) is now available on the DH website at http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications/PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_121393

This business plan sets out the vision and priorities for the Department of Health, and in the Structural Reform section the key commitments involved in delivering their reform programme. The Transparency section of the plan sets out the key indicators that the DH believe are most useful to the public in understanding the costs and outcomes of health and social care services, and also provides a wealth of additional data that Boards and the public will find useful, and which is further expanded in the supporting Information Strategy that accompanies the plan.

Staff at Stepping Hill - the library needs your help!

The library is running a survey about health promotion this month and we need to gather as many responses from hospital staff as we possibly can.

Recently, members of library staff visited some of the wards, armed with yellow questionnaires (and free pens!) and asked clinical staff to complete our survey. If you are employed by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, and if you haven't already done a library survey on the ward, please help us by completing one online. There are only 6 questions, and the survey should take less than 30 seconds to complete. (We've timed it!)
