White paper update for all NHS North West Staff

Please note that the DH business plan (2011 – 2015) is now available on the DH website at http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications/PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_121393

This business plan sets out the vision and priorities for the Department of Health, and in the Structural Reform section the key commitments involved in delivering their reform programme. The Transparency section of the plan sets out the key indicators that the DH believe are most useful to the public in understanding the costs and outcomes of health and social care services, and also provides a wealth of additional data that Boards and the public will find useful, and which is further expanded in the supporting Information Strategy that accompanies the plan.

NOVEMBER 2010

A splash of colour as the days get darker...

Staff at Stepping Hill - the library needs your help!

The library is running a survey about health promotion this month and we need to gather as many responses from hospital staff as we possibly can.

Recently, members of library staff visited some of the wards, armed with yellow questionnaires (and free pens!) and asked clinical staff to complete our survey. If you are employed by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, and if you haven't already done a library survey on the ward, please help us by completing one online. There are only 6 questions, and the survey should take less than 30 seconds to complete. (We've timed it!)

There is a link to the survey on the library's microsite on the hospital intranet, or you can click on the link here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HR9KDJQ

We have free pens, fridge magnets and keyrings for anyone who comes into the library and completes a survey for us! Available while stocks last... :-)

Two quality sources of patient information

Healthtalkonline and Youth Healthtalk are evidence-based collections of patient experiences, discussing themes such as reactions to diagnosis, effect on work or social life, treatment options or side-effects. Youth Healthtalk focuses on young people's concerns about health and illness.

Both websites are produced by the charity Database of Individual Patient Experience (DIPEx) and use rigorous and systematic research methods to collect and analyse interviews with people in the UK from all ethnic groups. These accounts, in video, audio or written format, ensure that a full range of patients' perspectives are presented.

You can encourage patients and their families to visit these websites to help them make informed decisions about a particular condition or illness, treatment options and support.

Healthtalkonline is available here: http://www.healthtalkonline.org/
You can access Youth Healthtalk here: http://www.youthhealthtalk.org/

Emerald Healthcare Management Resources

The library has arranged a free trial of Emerald Management First, an online collection of journals and books covering topics such as HR, leadership, change management, strategy and finance.

Child and Maternal Health Observatory

The national Child and Maternal Health Observatory ('ChiMat') supports commissioners, managers and other stakeholders who work within maternal and children's health.

Resources include a database of publications, policies and guidance, a range of key information sources and online toolkits.

The website produces a weekly Knowledge Update with news, events, reports and research, to help inform decision-making for high-quality, cost-effective services.

Take a look at the resources available from the ChiMat website here: http://www.chimat.org.uk/default.aspx

A new version of MyiLibrary has just been launched, which is compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 (and above), or Mozilla Firefox 3.0 (and above). If you are still using Internet Explorer 6, you may find some problems when using MyiLibrary. Upgrading to a different browser such as IE7 or Firefox should solve any issues.

If you've never used electronic books before, the library offers free training sessions (see below for dates). If you'd like to know what electronic books are available, click on the following link: http://tinyurl.com/myilibrary and browse the subjects or search for a particular title.
