223 people completed our online survey and the results are now being analysed. 76% were from the Foundation Trust and 19% from the PCT

The makeup of those who completed was as follows:
39% doctors; 34% nurses; 10% AHP; 3% Scientific

Of those who replied to the question about UpToDate 70% would wish to keep it with some journal provision.

You have access to these journals only within the Library. Ask the Library staff to log you on, as your usual Trust Athens account will not give you access to these particular journals.

Printing in the Library

The library computers are connected to the photocopier which has greatly enhanced the service you get. You can now

• print in colour for 30p per A4 side or 50p per A3 side
• print on both sides (b&w 5p per side or colour as above)
• print in booklet format (must be chosen before printing)
• when you click on print you get a number and how much the job will cost to print. You do not pay until you are ready to print
• No more printing 50 pages by accident
• printing available for out of hours users

Remember when printing, you must use the exact money. Change is available at the Enquiry Counter. However, if you have say 3 jobs of 10p each, you can put in 30p and print out the 3 jobs together.

Welcome to Vicki

We are very pleased to welcome Vicki Ferri to our staff. She has already show her worth by helping at the new doctors induction on her first day. She is new to the NHS and thus will need time to learn about working in a medical library. I am sure you'll all make her very welcome and be patient if she doesn't yet know something.

LAST CHANCE

If you use journals then you really MUST complete our online survey. Because of the lower than expected response we have extended it until the 9th September. Electronic journal purchasing is complex and we need to be able to get the best match to your requirements for the budget we have.

New Management Books

The SHA have provided us with a selection of management books: some new and some classic texts. If you are studying for any management module or course it would be worth your while exploring the Library catalogue. Within the Trust this can be done from any computer by going to the Knowledge Zone Microsite and clicking on the Quick Link to the Library Catalogue. Once in there you can type in the surname of the author, part of the title or a key word to find if we have any suitable titles.

Not sure what to do? Come up to the 1st Floor in Pinewood House and we can give you a quick demonstration!

IMPORTANT ~ Journal Survey

We need your help. If you have filled in the survey then please encourage your colleagues. If you haven't filled it in - please do it now.

As of the 1st August we have only had 87 people wanting to inform us about the journals they use and would like to have access to. Of this number only 7 are from the PCT.

If we do not tell me what you would like to access, we will have to make decisions based on a limited view.

Vicki Ferri starts 6th August

I'm sure you will be delighted to hear that Vicki Ferri, our new Assitant Librarian, will be starting on Wednesday 6th August. Mary Hill, Library Manager, will then promptly go on holiday! Please do everything to make her welcome and be patient as she learns the ropes in some very difficult circumatances.

Library Logins

During August all library computers will change to an automatic generic login after the black security login. You will no longer be able to login as yourself

Access to Groupwise e-mails
You will need to set a password on Groupwise. You can then access it via Groupwise Webmail

Printing
This will be from the photocopier only. This does allow you to print back to back and in colour as well as standard printing. Costs are displayed in the library, along with instructions on each machine. Ask the library staff if you need help.
Photocoping cards will be introduced at the beginning of September, for those who want them, at a cost of £2 per card which can be uploaded with money for printing.

Saving your work
You will no longer have access to your H drive but a common drive exists on the J drive, called Library. This is available across the Trust. Notes on protecting your work are available from a leaflet on the Knowledge Zone > Documents > Guideline > LIB04

Dialog no longer available

Dialog is no longer available to NHS staff. All searches must be conducted using the NLH Search 2 found at www.library.nhs.uk and logon with your Athens password. This is an improving system which now has a clipboard and is able to de-duplicate. Do try it out.

James Leaves

We sent James off in style with a gathering on his last Wednesday and a meal with the Training Department on the Thursday evening. His farewell presentation can be viewed within the Trust by clicking on the J drive and going to Library > James. This will be available until the end of September.

From James, a final beautiful photograph to see us through the summer

James goes on to bigger and better(?) things

Rumours that James will be leaving us are absolutely true. He will be moving onto an excellent post at Salford University and we are more than sorry to see him go. His last day at work will be Thursday 24th July.

Over the last 2 years, James has

• developed further our online access and resources. This has helped users. He has also made the processes behind them as efficient and idiot proof as possible (he will be leaving them for us non-techies to operate).


• He has entertained and educated with his talks and training sessions


• His photographs have graced our newsletters


• His patience with those struggling with this complex electronic world is legendary


• He has introduced us to electronic newsletters, countless databases and Mark Miller photographs of brain cells


• He has been nominated for support staff of the year


• He has tidied shelves, stamped books and made countless cups of tea


• But best of all, he has been great company, making us laugh with his wry sense of humour
  

I am speaking for everyone when I say, he will be very much missed but we do wish him all the very best and hope that Salford appreciate him as much as we do.

We have appointed his replacement who will be starting on Wednesday 6th August. Her name is Vicki Ferri and she is coming to us from the University of Chester Library in Warrington.

What happened to Blackwell Synergy?

Blackwell Synergy journals, such as BJOG and the Journal of Advanced Nursing, are now owned by Wiley. This has resulted in a few changes when you access titles

• you can still access them from the A-Z, both from the intranet and internet
• you still need to logon using Athens.
• Find the article you want as before. Once at the article, click on the html (extra features) or pdf (printable) versions
• Click on the small link to Athens either at the top right hand corner or below the registered users login on the left
• You will be taken to an Athens authentication page where you type in your username and password which should grant to you access

Currently we are experiencing problems with the actual logon to articles. We have contacted Wiley and hopefully this will be quickly resolved.

Journal Survey

We want to buy the best journal collection we can for all specialities for the money we have. So from 14th July - 1st August we will be running a very simple online survey which should take the minimum amount of time to complete. Look out for this and complete it when you see it. It will help us make the best decision for the journals we purchase in 2009.

Search 2

The demise of Dialog access has again been moved back and is now given as Thursday 31st July 2008 and we have been assured that this will be the final date.

There have been some recent changes which have improved stability and added some new features.

BEST NEW FEATURE: You can now search the Health Business (management journals) database from the advanced search facility.

Team Knowledge Officers

In June 2007 the National Library for Health (NLH) Board commissioned a review of NHS Libraries in England to make recommendations for the future of such services. The report, known as the Hill Review, was published in March 2008 and includes 50 recommendations.

One recommendation is that Trusts identify a Board level Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO). For Stockport NHS Foundation Trust this will be Nicola Reucroft and for Stockport PCT it will be Stephen Watkins.

A second is to develop the Team Knowledge Officer (TKO) role within Trusts. Every clinical or management team in the NHS should identify someone in the team as “Team Knowledge Officer” (or equivalent). The TKO will have responsibility for ensuring the effective input of evidence to enable the team to function properly. The Library Service will very much support this role and will liaise with this person by offering training on our resources to teams or individuals; helping to keep your team up to date; help with finding evidence; building the resources you need, to name but a few.

Bill Cheetham is the TKO for the Infection Prevention and Control Team. As somebody interested in the importance of evidence you might like to consider taking on the role for your team. Anyone who liked to find out more, please contact Mary Hill by e-mail or on 5809.

Exciting new e-books

Nationally a new set of e-books have been bought which include a number of Oxford Handbooks. Unfortunately we are loosing access to the WHO collection which has not been well used.

Just a reminder that James is a finalist for the Support Staff of the Year at the Gala Awards on Friday June 6th. All Library users and staff are hoping his hard work, patience, depth of knowledge and great sense of humour will be acknowledged and rewarded.

Printing in the Library

Frequent Library users will be aware that you can now print to the photocopier. The advantages for you are

• Colour printing available but you need to select this by: File > Print > select Properites > click on the "paw" to change it to colour. Then OK this. If your document has mixed colour and black & white (b&w) pages then it will charge you colour rate for those with colour and b&w rate for the others

• When you click OK to print it will come up with a screen that shows the amount the copy will cost and a code. Note both down and take it to the photocopier - follow the instructions on the wall by the photocopier to print. This means that you can not accidentally print out a 100 pages! If it comes to £5 and you only wanted a page you just leave it and have another go.

• As you become an advanced user you will note you can do A3 printing, make booklets, double sided printing and even add easy watermarks.

• Out of hours printing will be available in the near future.

Health Management Collection

We have access to an exciting collection of Health Management journals. You will need an Athens password to access these.

Renew Online

We are delighted to announce that you can now renew books from within the Hospital Trust ONLINE!
It's easy ~ follow these instructions. You will need to have your blue Education Centre Library card available

• At a Trust computer, logon to the Intranet
• Select K for Knowledge Zone
• Click on the Quick Link Library Catalogue
• Select login from the top and type in your card number e.g. B10105
• Click on the book you want to renew and press renew

You will not be able to renew if your book is required by another reader (reserved by another reader) or if you owe us a lot of money!

This will be a really useful feature for night staff! If you are viewing this from a Foundation Trust computer, click here to go straight to the catalogue.
